Elbert Greenman was born at Lamont, Pennsylvania, the brother of Ernest M. and Albert A. Greenman. By 1886 he was living in Nederland, Colo. He attended the University of Colorado in 1888-1889, after which he taught school in the mountain camps of Boulder County. In 1892 he entered the law office of O. F. A. Green of Boulder, and was later admitted to the bar. He began a career in politics in 1894 when he was elected to the tenth Colorado General Assembly.
Greenman served as Boulder City Attorney, Mayor, and State Representative.
