Bernfield, Merton

Merton Bernfield, pediatrician and cell biologist, earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois in 1961. He was a research associate with Marshall Nirenberg at the National Heart Institute before coming to Stanford in 1967, where he was a professor in the medical school and in the university's School of Humanities and Sciences, serving as chair of the Program in Human Biology. He left Stanford in 1989 to join the faculty of Harvard Medical School. He died in 2002.
