Neil W. Hosley (1901-1986) earned a master's degree in forestry from Harvard in 1925 and a doctorate in wildlife management from the University of Michigan in 1938. He served as head of the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management at Michigan and subsequently spent four years with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a biologist in charge of wildlife investigations on public lands. In 1950, when a cooperative wildlife research unit was established at the University of Alaska, Hosley transferred to College, Alaska, as the unit leader. In 1951 he accepted the position of dean of the University of Alaska and served in that capacity through 1957.
