James Cross Giblin was born July 8, 1933, in Cleveland, OH. He became interested in theater in high school, studying drama at Northwestern University for one semester before transferring to Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University), where he earned a B.A. in 1954. Giblin went on to earn an M.F.A. in playwriting from Columbia University in 1955. Giblin's interest in writing led him to a career in publishing in New York City. It was during his work as an editor that Giblin first considered writing books. His first book, The Scarecrow Book, a collaboration with Dale Ferguson, was published in 1980. Since then, he has written more than 20 nonfiction titles for children, covering a wide range of topics. He has been praised for his ability to cover complex situations in a simple and entertaining way, without sacrificing important detail. Giblin's books have earned him numerous awards and honors, including several American Library Association Notable Children's Book citations, Golden Kite Awards for nonfiction, and an American Book Award for Children's Nonfiction.
