Samuel Reed Shaner was born in Zieglerville, Pa., on 1 May 1884. He married Delilah Mae Glasser in 1917; they had three daughters. Shaner died of myocardial infarction on 10 Aug. 1960.
Shaner received an M.D. from the Medico-Chirurgical College of Philadelphia in 1916 and also received the James M. Anders Gold Medal Award for medical case reporting. From 1917 to 1926, he assisted James William Kennedy, chief surgeon at Joseph Price Memorial Hospital. Shaner practiced medicine in Philadelphia and was a consultant in obstetrics and gynecology at the Philadelphia Dispensary.
