Art director and painter; New York, N.Y.

Born in New York City of Hungarian parents, Varga studied at the National Academy of Design and received art training at the Art Students League with Boardman Johnson and Robert Laurent. In 1931, frustrated by the indifference of art dealers to works by younger artists, she opened a cooperative Painters and Sculptors' Gallery, which stayed in business for 3 years. Beginning in 1936, Varga worked for many years for LIFE magazine. In 1960, she became art consultant for TIME, Inc.
