Maria Jane Southgate was born on November 30, 1836, to James Southgate and Jane Smith. She married Captain James Morrison Hawes on February 3, 1857. He served as a brigadier general of cavalry with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. She lived primarily in Paris, Ky., and Kansas before the war, and in Kentucky, Mississippi, Arkansas, Shreveport, La., and Galveston, Tex. during it. They settled in Covington, Ky., after the war where her husband became a hardware merchant. She died on March 20, 1918.
