The University Professional Librarians' Group founded in 1960 was succeeded by APLUA in 1966, which unlike its predecessor, had a formal constitution. Its mandates include the promotion and advancement of the interests and welfare of professional librarians and the insurance that they will provide the best possible professional service. It also promotes continuing education and encourages an interest in and knowledge of the profession at all levels and in all types of libraries. Its goal is to foster the formation of a provincial professional librarian association.
