Colonel W.C. Falkner, great-grandfather to William Faulkner, was born 6 July 1826 in Knox County, Tennessee. He arrived in Mississippi at Seventeen and settled in Ripley, where he married Holland Pearce, who died shortly after. After serving in the Mexican War and the Civil War, where he formed the Magnolia Rifles Company as part of the Second Mississippi Infantry and attained the rank of Colonel. During Reconstruction, Falkner formed the Ship Island, Ripley, and Kentucky Railroad Company. He was shot 5 November 1889 by R.J. Thurmond, a former business parter, and died the following day.
