Missionary in Persia; born Sarah Belknap Sherwood on December 13, 1854 in upstate New York; went to Hamadan, Persia in 1883 as a missionary of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S., where she taught at a girl's school and visited local women; married James W. Hawkes in 1884; continued as missionary in Persia for several years; died in 1919.
