Daughter of Dr. Thomas Leslie Burgess (1824-1896) and Frances Anne Mayes Burgess (1840-1903) of Clarendon County, S.C.; sister of Anne Custis Burgess, composer of "Carolina: the state song," whose name was sometimes published as Anna Curtis Burgess.
