James Edward Talmage was born Sept. 21, 1862 at Hungerford, England, and immigrated to America in 1872. After graduating from the normal course of Brigham Young Academy, he taught there for three years. He next studied at Lehigh University and Johns Hopkins. In 1888, he became President of the Latter-Day Saint Academy. In 1894, at the age of 32 he was appointed president of the University of Utah. He resigned in 1897, and died July 27, 1933.
Joseph T. Kingsbury was born Nov. 4, 1853 in Weber County, Utah. He entered the University of Deseret and studied under Dr. John R. Park, then studied a two year course at Cornell. He returned to teach at the University of Utah in 1878. He became acting president from 1892-1894, and was named president after the resignation of Talmage in 1897. Kingsbury resigned in 1916 as president, and served as President Emeritus until his death April 10, 1937.
