Daniel James Barber, son of Elijah Barber of Pownall, Vt. A graduate of Williams College (class of 1859), he set out "for the South on Sept. 19th 1859, for the purpose of spending the winter there in teaching." He went to Troy whence he went on board of the steamboat Francis Skiddy to New York where he stayed with his cousin G. A. Gardner a preacher at Manhattanville college. He then left left for Wilmington, N.C. by way of Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., and took a steamboat to Acquia Creek and then Augusta, Ga. When Barber's expectations of finding a teaching job in Augusta didn't materialize, he moved on to Union Point, and then to Queensborough, Ga. Barber returned to Vermont, and in 1861-1864 was engaged in farming and cattle and horse trading business. By 1893, he moved to North Adams, Mass.
