Mary C. Craig grew up in Arnprior, Ontario, and graduated from a teachers college in Orillia, Ontario, ca.1890. She taught English at Curtis High School in Staten Island, N.Y., and kept house for her ailing father and financially dependent brother. She retired in 1927; her father died later that year. She and her brother later moved to Maryland. Her sister, Flora (Craig) Detwiler was married to Jacob S. Detwiler. Their son Donald J. was married to Hazel Scaife. He served as a radio operator on a merchant ship on the Great Lakes and in the Navy during World War II, and as a civil aviation adviser at the American embassy in Spain during the 1950s.
