Peter A. Dey was born in New York state in 1825. He graduated from college and studied law before becoming a civil engineer specializing in transportation, railway construction and bridges. He worked for a number of railroads, including the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific, and the Union Pacific. In 1864 Dey left railroading to be a banker in Iowa City. Dey was active in politics and interested in history. He served as mayor of Iowa City, president of the State Historical Society of Iowa, and was appointed to the Iowa Railway Commissioners in 1878, serving until 1895. Dey married Catherine Thompson in 1856, they had six children. He died in Iowa City on July 12, 1911.
