Lasley was at Mackinac during the surrender of the American fort. In 1813, Lasley was imprisoned at Fort Malden in Amherstburg (Canada). After trying to escape, he was given his freedom in return for delivering a letter to the British commander at Mackinac Island, where he further observed Dousman. Dousman was pro-British, appeared with the flag of truce asking the fort to surrender in 1812, and was afterwards was rewarded by being named supervisor of the highways, 1812-1815. Dousman also had his goods, which had been seized for non-payment of taxes, returned to him and was offered a commission as Captain in the British Army for recruiting men to the British Army.
