Paul Berthier was one of the first photographers to document objects to be sold at auction; he also produced topographical and nature photographs. His photos date from 1857-1865.

Prince Alexis Soltykoff (1806-1859) traveled widely collecting hundreds of objects; he published accounts of his travels in India and Persia.
