The Academic Skills/Learning Resource Center was started under a grant project as the Special Services Project, which addressed the need to assist students from minorities and lower income families to achieve parity academic goals in coursework, testing and graduation rates. The initial funding came from the SSDS (Special Services for Disadvantaged Students) Program, U.S. Department of Education.
