Bradley Hawkes Patterson was born in 1921 in Newton, Massachusetts. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1943 with A.B. and A.M. degrees. He worked as a teacher from 1943 to 1945, at the Cranbrook School for Boys in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. From 1945 to 1954 he held various positions in the Department of State, and from 1954 to 1961 he worked at the White House as Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet. Patterson briefly served as a Management Analyst at the Bureau of the Budget in 1961, and was Executive Secretary of the Peace Corps from 1961 to 1962. He served as National Security Affairs Adviser at the Department of the Treasury from 1962 to 1966, Executive Director of the National Advisory Commission on Selective Service from 1966 to 1967, and Executive Director of the National Advisory Council on Economic Opportunity from 1967 to 1969. Patterson served in a number of positions during the Nixon and Ford administrations. He first worked on the White House staff as Executive Assistant to the Special Consultant to the President (Leonard Garment), from 1969 to 1974. In October 1974 he briefly served as Assistant for Staff Coordination on the First Lady's Staff, and from 1974 to 1976 he worked in the Ford White House as Assistant Director for Operations, Presidential Personnel Office. President Ford appointed him Special Assistant to the President for Native American Programs in August 1976. He served in this position until January 1977, when he left to work for the Brookings Institution.
