The International Woodworkers of America was formed in Portland in 1937. In British Columbia the predecessor of the IWA was the Lumber Worker's Industrial Union. In 1936 the LWIU affiliated with the American Federation of Labor and was to be grouped under the AFL's Carpenter's organization. West Coast discontent with the AFL resulted in a meeting of representatives of the newly organized union locals in the fall of 1936 to form the Federation of Woodworkers which became the IWA in the summer of 1937. The Canadian division of the IWA in British Columbia was known as District Council No. 1 but later became Western Canadian Regional Council No. 1.
