The NSFRE was founded in New York City in 1960 as the National Society of Fund Raisers; the name changed to National Society of Fund Raising Executives in 1978.

The NSFRE serves as the principal professional association for fund raisers in the United States, and in 1990 had 11,000 members and 109 chapters. The NSFRE works to promote professional and ethical standards in the field through annual conferences, seminars, publications, a certification program, and support for research and publicity on the role of philanthropy in American life.
