The Year 2000 and Beyond conference, held March 30 - April 2, 1989, in St. Charles, Illinois, was sponsored by Lutheran Brotherhood. The objectives of the conference were to provide opportunity for reflection on the ways in which the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) would continue its ministry in the 1990s and beyond, to identify possible issues of major concern in the future of the churchwide organization, to aid the ELCA leadership in forming appropriate means of responding to those issues, to serve as a resource for participants, and to enable interaction among ELCA leadership for discussion and debate on the issues of mission and ministry. The original idea for the conference began in the mid-1980s with the Lutheran Church in America's Division for World Mission and Ecumenism. In the end it was sponsored by the ELCA in cooperation with the Center for Global Mission and the Chicago Center for Religion and Science. Themes for the conference were War and Peace, Conflict and Cooperation, Humanizing the Evolution of Culture, and Marshaling Resources and Institutions.
