Paterson, A.B. (Andrew Barton), 1864-1941
Variant namesPoet, journalist, solicitor. "Banjo" Paterson served in World War I as an ambulance driver in the Australian Hospital, Bourlogne, 1914-15. In 1915 he joined the Australian Remount Service in Egypt and Palestine. By the end of the War he had risen to the rank of Major.

This poem by Banjo Paterson was first published in the Bulletin of 1900 May 19. It is reprinted in Volume 1 of Paterson's collected works Singer of the bush. Sydney: Lansdowne, 1983. The poem refers to the Boer War and was written and addressed to Lieutenant D.M. King. King mounted photographs of Gallipoli on the verso of the card on which he mounted the poem.
