Gary Monroe was born in Miami Beach, Florida. He received a Master's degree in Fine Arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1977. Since then Monroe's work chiefly has been focused on documenting various communities in Florida and Haiti, although he has also traveled in other countries around the world. His work has been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, Florida Department of State's Division of Cultural Affairs, Florida Humanities Council, and the Fulbright Foundation.
