Born near Savannah, Georgia; graduated from Georgia Military Institute; rose from second lieutenant to colonel, commanding various Georgia units in the Confederate Army; practiced law in Alabama after the War; Alabama state senator 1878-1884 and 1900-1904; U.S. Representative from Alabama 1894-1897.
