Anna Ruth Brummett was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1924. She received the B.A. with honors from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1948, the M.A. from the same university in 1949, and the Ph. D. in biology from Bryn Mawr College in 1953. She taught biology at Bryn Mawr (1952-53) and at Carleton College (1953-61) before joining the Oberlin College biology faculty as Assistant Professor in 1961. She reached the rank of Professor in 1973. At Oberlin, Brummett served on numerous elected committees and was instrumental in the founding of the Committee on the Status of Women (1972). Her research in the field of the early embryology of bony fishes was prodigious, winning the attention of the international community of cellular biologists. She died of cancer on October 21, 1985.
