Born and raised in Canton, Ill., Tracy attended Oberlin Conservatory of Music (1887-1890) and for two years taught at an American Missionary Association School for "colored" children in Lexington, Ky. There she met Mary Helen Humphrey, (Mount Holyoke, A.B., 1890), a fellow teacher. Tracy returned home and in 1902 married Edward Holman Tracy, a lawyer from Cleveland, Ohio, where they subsequently lived.
