Biographical Note

Andrew Allen Harwood (1802-1884) was a naval officer and great grandson of Benjamin Franklin. He began his career with an appointment as midshipman of the Saranac (gun brig) in 1818. In 1862, during the Civil War, he was appointed commodore of the Potomac Flotilla. He published The Law and Practice of United States Naval Courts-martial (New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1867) and retired as a rear admiral in 1874.
