Phillip N. Twombly was born in 1922. He enlisted in the Army on February 18, 1943 at Fort Devens, Mass. At the time of his enlistment, Twombly had completed one year of college and was working in the motion picture industry. He came to the 10th Mountain Division while it was engaged in winter warfare training at Camp Hale, Colo. Later, he served at Camp Swift, Tex. and in Italy. During his combat tour in Italy, Twombly was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
