Joseph Volney Lewis, a geologist, taught at Clemson University from 1896-1904 and Rutgers University from 1904-1926. He worked for Gulf Oil Corporation from 1926-1930, was in charge of earth sciences exhibits at the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago, Illinois, 1931-1934, worked briefly for the United States Geological Survey, and from 1934-1961 for the National Park Service, with assignments to various war-related agencies during World War II.
