Fort Union (N.M.)
The largest U.S. Army post guarding the southwestern frontier, Fort Union was established in 1851 in northeastern New Mexico near the junction of the Mountain and Cimarron branches of the Santa Fe Trail.
Fort Union served as a tactical base and supply depot for lesser posts throughout the region as well as a way station for travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. A separate ordnance arsenal also occupied the site. With the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1879, Fort Union's importance quickly dimminished. The arsenal was discontinued in 1882 and by 1891 the fort was abandoned.
