George Harvison Deer served as principal of the Louisiana State University Laboratory School (1940-1945), professor of education (1945-1959), and Dean of the Junior Division (1959-1966). He was president of the local chapter of the American Association of University Professors. The George H. Deer Distinguished Teacher Award recognizes outstanding instruction by a faculty member who teaches fundamental courses to freshman students.
