Underhill, at the time of his retirement in 1963, served 45 years in the U.C. system, the longest period then known. He graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1915 and in 1918 began working for U.C. as an accountant. In 1933 he was appointed treasurer and in 1959 vice president. As a U.C. administrator, he was involved with the development of Los Alamos and later with the Atomic Energy Commission.
