John W. Nixon was born in Chester, England September 17, 1851. He moved to Canada in 1871 and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at Fort McCloud. In January 1873 he came across the border and settled at Sun River where he established a livery stable. Fifteen years later he began ranching on land 14 miles west of Augusta. He was one of the founders of the People's Bank of Augusta.

John Nixon married Olive White in 1883. The couple had three children: Chester, Alice, and Bee. Nixon died in May, 1923.
