The 158 Club was founded in 1949 when Frederick Santler, graduate manager and a professor at Whitman College, noted that paid attendance at a football game was 158 people. He stated that "it looked like the beginning of the end for intercollegiate athletics at Whitman." Once the club was established, it dedicated itself to raising funds to support Whitman athletes in their endeavours by funding partial scholarships.
