Blunt, Wilfrid Scawen, 1840-1922
Variant namesWilfred Scawen Blunt was an English author and explorer. He was born in Sussex, and served in the diplomatic corps in Europe and South America. He retired in 1872, married Anne Isabella Noel, Lord Byron's granddaughter, and they travelled through Europe and the Middle East, and went into partnership breeding Arabian horses. He vociferously opposed British imperialism, and was imprisoned in 1888 for supporting Irish Home Rule. He kept a diary for most of his adult life, and also wrote numerous treatises and poems, some celebrating his infamous hedonism, others expressing his opposition to imperialism. Throughout his life, he remained on good terms with a number of prominent statesmen and poets, including Winston Churchill, Oscar Wilde, and Ezra Pound.
