This collection documents Local 406's history from 1936-1978. ITU Local 406 was organized by 1902, when it sent a representative to the annual Iowa State Federation of Labor convention. Local 406 represented printers and typesetters working at Central Show Printing, Klipto Loose Leaf, Klipto-Stoyles Printing, and the Mason City Globe-Gazette newspaper. The Local had less than 30 members by 1978, many of them pensioners paying reduced dues. The introduction of electronic typesetting, cold type operators, and an aging membership compelled Local 406 to unite with Des Moines ITU Local 118 in 1978. In 1986 Local 118 became CWA Local 14715 when the ITU merged with the Communications Workers of America.
