Indiana University. Dean of Women's Office

Hide Profile

The Dean of Women's Office was created at Indiana University in 1901.

The duties of the Dean of Women covered all aspects of the female students' lives, including academic work, social activities, health issues and moral behavior. A significant responsibility of the office was to help coeds find adequate housing in the Bloomington area since no dormitory existed on campus for women until 1925. The first Dean of Women was Louise Goodbody, followed by Carrie DeNise, Ruby E. Mason, Agnes E. Wells and Kate Hevner Mueller. The Dean of Women's Office became defunct in 1946 when its responsibilities were taken over by the newly created Dean of Students Office.
