Joseph Battell was an American farmer, author, and politician. Born in Middlebury, Vermont, and educated at Middlebury College, he became editor and publisher of the Middlebury Register, and formed the American Publishing Co. He owned several large farms and the Bread Loaf Inn, and raised Morgan horses. He served eight terms in the Vermont State legislature, as a Republican Representative and Senator. Battell wrote one novel, and numerous books on horses.
