James Wilkie Nisbet was born in 1903 . His father was a mining and civil engineer. He entered the University of Glasgow aged 17 and was a student from 1921-1926 . In his first year, 1921-1922, he studied Latin, Maths and Political Economics. The following year, 1922-1923, he studied Political Economics, Logic and English. In his third year, 1923-1924, he studied for Logic (Hons), Political Economics (Hons) and Constitutional Law and History. In his fourth year, 1924-1925, Gray studied for Logic (Hons), Political Economics (Hons), Constitutional Law and History. He graduated MA in 1924 , and LLB in 1926 .
He went on to become a lecturer of Political Economy at the University of St Andrews, and died in St Andrews on 26 March 1974.
