Varian Associates was a high-technology firm founded by Russell H. and Sigurd F. Varian in January 1948. During the 1930s Russell H. Varian worked on the development of the Klystron at Stanford University. After World War II the Varian brothers established a firm, located at Stanford's industrial park, in order to explore applications of microwave and Klystron technology. Varian's electronic instruments were used primarily for analysis of chemical compounds and for medical and industrial purposes. During the 1960s it began producing digital computers that were used primarily in instrument and medical systems. In June 1977 the Sperry Rand Corporation purchased the Varian Data Machines operation and housed it in its Univac Division as Sperry Univac Mini Computer Operations.
