Rebecca Fish was born on August 9, 1770, the daughter of Eliakim Fish (d. 1804) and Sarah Stillman. She and her husband, Jesse Root (1766-1828), the son of Continental Congress member Jesse Root (1736-1822) and Mary Banks (1732-1813), lived in Hartford, Connecticut, with their ten children: Julia Ann (1790-1820), Mary Banks (1791-1824), Eliakim Fish (1792-1835), Sally (b. 1794), Jesse A. (b. 1795), Emily Stillman (b. 1797), Rebecca (b. 1800), Wealthy Ann (b. 1803), George Gabriel (1808-1864), and Henry W. (1810-1863).
