Casey, Ralph D. (Ralph Droz), 1890-
Variant namesRalph Droz Casey was born on May 8, 1890 in Aspen, Colorado. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1913 and master's degree in 1924 from the University of Washington. In 1929, he earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin. Before becoming a professor of journalism, Dr. Casey was a reporter for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and the New York Herald . He was an instructor at the University of Montana (1916-1919), the University of Washington (1919-1920) and the University of Oregon (1922-1930). In 1930, Dr. Casey came to the University of Minnesota as professor and director of the School of Journalism. He served as director 1930 to 1958, retiring as director emeritus in 1958. Under his leadership, the school was the first in the county to establish a research division for the study of mass communications and he developed a graduate program leading to the Ph.D. degree. Ralph D. Casey died on July 16, 1977.
