From 1899 until 1920 Wilhelm Levison was on the staff of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica . From 1903 he taught at the University of Bonn, from 1920 to 1935 as Ordinarius für mittelalterliche und neuere Geshichte und geschichtliche Hilfswissenschaften. In 1938 Levison, who was Jewish and who had received an honorary Durham D. Litt. in 1931, was offered an Honorary Fellowship by the University of Durham. He moved from Bonn to Durham in 1939, and lived and worked there until his death.
