The Social Service League of Iowa City was established to be a clearinghouse for Iowa City and Johnson County social agencies, to maintain a confidential registry of clients, to encourage interest in social movements and to promote efficiency in the provision of social services. It appears that the League may have originally been called the Iowa City Charities Council but changed its name soon after its inception in 1917. In Jan. of 1936 the organization was incorporated. The League was a member of the Family Welfare Association of America (a national organization of social service agencies) from the early 1930s until 1940.
