Robert Lee Avary, lawyer and educator, was born 15 June 1863, in DeKalb County, Georgia. He attended Emory College (A.B., 1886) and the University of Georgia (1890, LL. B.) and was admitted to the Georgia bar (1890), after which he began to practice law in Atlanta. He was a professor of medical jurisprudence at the Atlanta Medical College and Southern Medical College (both became part of Emory University, 1915), a professor of law at Atlanta Law School, president of the Emory College Alumni Association for fifteen years, and vice president of the Atlanta Bar Association.
