Hide Profile

The Dean of Residence, first appointed in 1949, was responsible for discipline, parietals, living arrangements, and student extracurricular activities. The office was reorganized in 1962 and phased out in 1971 when Harvard took over responsibility for Radcliffe undergraduate living arrangements. The first Dean of Residence was Mary Churchill Small (1949-1953), followed by Emily B. Lacey (1953-1957), Frances R. Brown (1957-1959), and Catharine Williston (1959-1962). Other executives in the office included Mary H. Winslow (1962-1965), Susan Olson Bolman (1965-1967), and Genevieve Austin (1967-1971). Prior to 1943, correspondence was handled by the Dean of the College.
