Brackenridge, John Thomas, 1828-1906

John Thomas Brackenridge, son of John Adams and Isabella McCulloch Brackenridge, was born in Warwick County, Indiana, on September 3, 1828. He attended the University of Indiana and Bloomington Law School, and was admitted to the bar in 1851. He practiced law at Boonville until 1854, when he moved to Texana, Jackson County, Texas, where he was a merchant until 1861. In 1862 he joined the Confederate Army, serving as captain of cavalry in Texas and Indian Territory. In 1863 he was commissioned major in the 33rd Cavalry under John B. Magruder.

Brackenridge became cashier for the San Antonio National Bank in 1866, and in 1877 he was president of the First National Bank of Austin. He was married twice, first to Miss G. R. Smith of Boonville, and second to Mary E. Dupuy in Jackson County, Texas. He died in San Antonio on March 3, 1906, and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.
