Ruggles, Richard, 1916-2001
Variant namesRichard Ruggles was born on June 15, 1916, in Columbus, Ohio. He received an A.B. in 1939, an M.A. in 1941, and a Ph.D. in 1942, all from Harvard University and all in economics. During World War II, Ruggles was an economist for the Office of Strategic Services, where he analyzed serial numbers of Nazi tanks and tires in order to estimate German tank production. In 1947, Ruggles came to Yale University as a professor of economics, eventually becoming the Stanley Resor Professor of Economics in 1954. During his forty years at Yale, Ruggles became known for improving governmental price indexes and for his development of accounting tools used to measure national income. He died on March 4, 2001.
