Born St. Paul, Minnesota, 1909; B.A. in psychology, University of Minnesota, 1930; M.S.W., Smith College School for Social Work, 1931; graduate degree in psychology, University of Minnesota, 1943; studied research methods at University of Pennsylvania, 1956-57. Lavell held an administrative position at the American Psychiatric Association from 1947-53 and while there was Editorial Assistant of American Journal of Psychiatry. She was the Chief Project Planner for the Philadelphia Antipoverty Action Committee in 1965; served as Assistant Director of the Philadelphia Schools Study, under contract with the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, 1966.
